Interviews
Speaking with creatives on their personal mythologies.
Justin Williams. The Belgrave Wizard - Baba Desi
Who is the wizard Baba Desi? How can one metaphorically carry the gift of a dead goat? What’s the best music to play at a party? Ahead of his solo show at Roberts Projects LA, I talked to folk artist Justin Williams about reclaiming abandoned heritage, the merits of awkwardness, and the visual eavesdropping that goes on in his work.
As a genderless person, I loved facilitating this conversation between intersex model Hanne Gaby Odiele and artist Katharina Kaminski on coming into Queer identity. They discuss self-advocacy, self-recognition, and the process of reincarnating fertility in a disembodied form through their respective creative practices.
Emma Webster, The Rehearsal (Harvest Moon) (2023)
60 x 84 in., oil on linen
How does one go about staging a stage? This is the question artist Emma Webster answers in an interview I greatly enjoyed ahead of her highly conceptual and immersive exhibition, Intermission, at Jeffrey Deitch.
Theater, Fear, and Fairy Tales
I had the pleasure of discussing the importance of a safe, communal space for marginalized identities to be seen in art with Jonathan Carver Moore, the first openly gay Black gallery owner in San Francisco, on the occasion of Zanele Muholi’s exhibition at his gallery.
